Korvai Sarees: Celebrating the Rich Legacy of Handwoven Kanjivaram Silk

Introducing the art of 'Korvai,' a signature technique that defines the charm of Kanjivaram silk. The word 'Korvai' translates to 'In Sync,' reflecting the harmony of craft that goes into each saree. At VL ZARIS, we're proud to carry this heritage forward with our exquisite Korvai collection.

Korvai sarees are woven through a unique, ancient technique. Two skilled artisans work together, interlocking contrasting colors on the body, border, and pallu, creating the striking contrast that defines these sarees. The process is done on a three-shuttle loom, where the borders and body come together seamlessly in this intricate, labor-intensive technique. This synchronized weaving brings out the bold, contrasting hues in each piece, making Korvai sarees a hallmark of tradition and beauty.

How to Identify a Korvai Saree?

A true Korvai saree is a treasure woven with tradition and precision. Here's how to spot one:

- Feel the craftsmanship: Run your fingers along the border joins. Handcrafted Korvai sarees feature subtle knots and slight irregularities, marking the authenticity of this intricate weaving technique.

- Contrast that speaks: Look for bold, contrasting hues between the body, border, and pallu. This vibrant interplay of colors is the soul of Korvai sarees.

- Double Korvai: Some masterpieces showcase an extra layer of artistry by incorporating double Korvai, adding even more brilliance to the weave.

Choose Korvai, choose heritage.

How is the Pallu Attached in a Korvai Saree?

The petni pallu technique is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, where the body of the saree is seamlessly interlocked with its pallu, often in vibrant contrasting colors.

The warp threads of the body are then hand-tied to the pallu’s threads using intricate looped twists, creating a flawless, blended appearance.

This labor-intensive process is a testament to the skill and dedication of artisans, making every Korvai saree a rare and cherished piece of tradition.

There is also a very modern technique used to this which is called as the “Bend Technique”. We have explained it as well.
